From where to organize an excursion in Morocco

Day Trips Get Your Desert Tours

Day Trips: If we put the focus on the geographical places from where to organize an excursion in Morocco. Morocco has some tourist destinations with a special variety of proposals. This is a list of cities from where to make these fleeting experiences for your trip:

Day Trips Marrakech: this is undoubtedly the great tourist epicenter of the country, not only for the attractions of its historic center but also for the variety of places of interest located very close by road. From the so-called ‘red city’, you can make some of the most fascinating excursions in Morocco, among them:

The High Atlas Mountains: in fact, from Marrakech you can reach several sectors of this mountain range, located south of the city and less than 200 km away. By the N9 road you can reach the famous Tizi N’Tichka pass, which offers one of the best panoramic views of the country.

Another option is the Ourika valley, with beautiful mountain scenery and small picturesque villages. And it is also possible to approach the slopes of Djebel Toubkal, the highest peak of the country, for which it will be necessary to cross places as suggestive as Asni or the Imlil Valley.

The Ouzoud Waterfalls: this is the most spectacular natural waterfall in the center of the country and is located about 180 km from Marrakech. In addition to its refreshing and relaxing waterfall, those who come here often see specimens of Barbary monkeys, so characteristic of Morocco.

The Agafay desert: the excursion to the Agafay desert is one of the favorite options for those who wish to have contact with the desert but do not have enough time to travel to the heart of the Sahara, in the south of the country. Therefore, this arid environment of dirt and pebbles serves to get a close look at the harsh conditions that mark the life of the local people.

Lake Lalla Takerkoust: this is the largest artificial lake around Marrakech. Although it is not possible to carry out aquatic activities in it, it is very popular with the Marrakechis for its proximity (40 km) and for the ‘chill out’ type establishments on its shores. It is also popular with tourists because of the wide range of possibilities to rent quads and enjoy routes in its surroundings.

Safi: the attraction of this city lies not only in the historical monuments, many of which evoke its Portuguese past, but also in the fact that it is the closest coastal town to Marrakech, just 150 km away. Therefore, a good option to discover the Atlantic from the red city.

Essaouira: 2 hours and a half away (180 km) is this other coastal city, with a greater wealth of monuments if possible. Not in vain was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, with a lively craft and folkloric activity in its medina, and interesting beaches in the surrounding area.

Day Trips to Ait Ben Haddou: this is a slightly longer excursion than the previous ones (180 km, 3 hours and a half), but it is justified by its enormous interest. It is an ancient fortified settlement of Berber origin, also declared a World Heritage Site.

Fez: is another of the great tourist cities of the country and, as such, also offers magnificent proposals for those interested in excursions in Morocco. Here are some places you can travel to in the same day from the city.

Meknes: like Marrakech and Fez, this small city is a World Heritage Site and Imperial City, as it was the capital of the kingdom in the past. Since its size is smaller and its tourist infrastructure is more limited, it is common to discover it as an excursion from nearby Fez (50 minutes, 60 km).

Volubilis: this is one of the largest and most interesting Roman archaeological sites in North Africa (80 km, 1 hour and a half). This is an essential excursion for history and culture lovers spending a few days in Fez.

Ifrane: known as the ‘Switzerland of Morocco’, is nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains, about 1,700 meters above sea level. Therefore, it is not infrequent snow during the winter, which is why the roofs of its buildings are reminiscent of alpine villages in Europe.

Azrou National Park: better known as Monkey Forest or Cedar Park, since this animal and this tree are the two most characteristic elements of this fragile natural ecosystem. It is located very close to Ifrane

Casablanca-Rabat: these two cities are located on the Atlantic coast, at a distance of about 90 km. There fore, it is possible to make excursions from one to the other, departing and returning on the same day. In addition, both cities are interesting to visit other coastal destinations, such as El Jadida or Kenitra.
