Erg Chegaga: Also known as Chegaga Dunes, is a large and remote desert area located in the southeastern part of Morocco, near the border with Algeria. It is part of the Sahara Desert, which spans across North Africa. Here are some key points about Erg Chegaga:
Location: Erg Chegaga is situated about 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of the town of M’hamid. The journey to Erg Chegaga typically involves a desert trek or a 4×4 excursion.
Dunes: The area is characterized by its vast sand dunes, some of which can reach heights of up to 60 meters (197 feet). The dunes of Erg Chegaga are known for their remote and pristine nature compared to other popular desert destinations like Erg Chebbi.
Remote and Undeveloped: Unlike Erg Chebbi, which is more easily accessible and has more tourist infrastructure, Erg Chegaga is less developed. This makes it an attractive destination for those seeking a more authentic and secluded desert experience.
Trekking and Excursions: Many visitors opt for camel treks or 4×4 excursions to explore Erg Chegaga. The journey through the desert can provide stunning views of the expansive dunes and the unique landscape of the Sahara.
Camping: There are opportunities for camping in the desert, either in traditional Berber-style tents or under the open sky. Spending a night in the desert offers a chance to experience the tranquility and beauty of the Sahara.
